Staying at 5 Foot Way Inn Boutique Hostel Singapore

We saw the perfect opportunity to visit Singapore when we recently needed to do a visa run for Indonesia. Coincidently, we received a message to collaborate with 5 Foot Way Inn Boutique Hostel in Singapore and after checking out their website we thought…absolutely!

Disclaimer: As always, all opinions in this post are our own.

Singapore

Stepping into the enormous airport and catching the advanced transport systems into the city of Singapore felt a bit surreal. After getting used to living in a third world country, we experienced a bit of a culture shock coming back into the developed world.

Not only is Singapore is a huge city, it’s also it’s own small country located on an island South of Malaysia. It’s very modern and definitely has a western feel to it…but with Asian cultures blended in. Similarly to Malaysia, the people of Singapore are ethnically Chinese, Malay and Indian, although there are many Europeans, Americans and Australians who live and thrive here.

5 Foot Way Inn

5 Foot Way Inn is a boutique budget hostel chain and is the biggest hostel chain in Singapore. It has various locations and all literally have a 5 foot entrance! We were invited to stay at the Project Boat Quay location and after following the well described directions by staff, we managed to find our 5 foot entrance amongst a street of busy shophouses (restaurants). A staircase took us up to the reception and once checked in we found a maze of hostel dorms. We couldn’t believe that there was such a big space on the other side of the easy to miss entrance.

5 Foot Way Inn is not just the average type of hostel with plain rooms and industrial feels where you just get a bed for the night. It is a ‘boutique’ hostel, which basically means that a bit more thought was put into the modern interior design and it’s extra little features boost the hostel’s status from good to great. Our first impressions of 5 Foot Way Inn were that of a modern look with neat furnished decor of black and white. The reception has comfy couches and cool quotes, while the terrace has a homely energy with views of the picturesque Singapore River and Marina Bay Sands in the distance. Good views, good vibes and good style let’s you enjoy hotel feels whilst staying in budget accommodation.

Location

The 5 Foot Way Inn that we stayed at is located at Boat Quay along the Singapore River. It’s conveniently close to the Raffles Place MRT (train station) and very close to Singapore’s Business District. There are restaurants and shops literally on the doorstep, and across the river you’ll find the Asian Civilisations Museum and Clarke Quay where you can do a Singapore River Cruise.

Tip: The train from the airport to Raffles Place is S$2.50. Don’t make the same mistake we did by buying a return ticket, unless you plan on returning on the same day.

Service

The staff are very helpful and friendly, and speak English well (which is refreshing if you’ve been travelling in Asia for a while!) They don’t just leave you to it, the staff give you a tour of the hostel and answer any questions to make you sure feel welcomed and happy with your stay. You’re also given a phone called ’Handy’ which you can use during your time at 5 Foot Way Inn. It has free local calls and unlimited internet that you can use all around Singapore, which is especially handy (excuse the pun) for using the Google maps app. So there’s no need to get a Sim Card at the airport or have to search for wifi everywhere you go to stay connected in Singapore.

Note: All guests are required to place a refundable security deposit of S$20 per person upon check-in.

Room

You can either stay in a shared dormitory with bunk beds or in private room. The room we stayed in was clean, the aircon was great (much needed in Singapore!) and it had good lighting. The security at 5 Foot Way Inn is excellent, you use a key card to get in to your room and press a button before opening the door from the inside for extra security. There are reading lamps and international plug sockets next to the beds so you don’t need to bring an adaptor to use electronics. If staying in a private room the towels are complimentary, otherwise you can rent one for S$2.

Facilities

Although all bathrooms at 5 Foot Way Inn are shared, the hot/cold showers are really good. We love a powerful shower and they even have free shower gel. The wifi is excellent and there is also free use of the latest iMac computers at reception, which we’ve never seen in a hostel before. The front desk is open 24-hours and has printing services incase you forget to print your boarding pass for that annoying budget airline (rookie mistake!).

Note: Check In Time is after 3pm and you must Check Out before 12pm.

We stayed in a private room so didn’t need lockers but they are available if you need it, and there is also a free storage room to store your luggage. Breakfast is free at 5 Foot Way Inn and is also the best time to meet other travellers. For breakfast you can help yourself to toast, butter, jam, peanut butter, cereal and milk. And here comes the best part…there is a free (unlimited) coffee machine that you can use 24/7!

Activities

There is a lot to do in Singapore, and many attractions that are close by to the hostel. A few activities we managed to fit in to our 3 day trip were: a sunset cruise with Singapore River Cruises, a free guided tour at the Asian Civilisations Museum, lunch at Little India, the famous Bugis Market, China Town, Marina Sands SkyDeck (doesn’t include use of the pool) and Gardens By The Bay.

Tip: You can use the ‘Handy’ device that’s loaned to you by 5 Foot Way Inn to get discounts on attractions in Singapore!

Price + Promo Code

5 Foot Way Inn is the most modern hostel we’ve stayed in and we definitely recommend staying here. Singapore is a lot more expensive than the other countries in South East Asia but it’s not just for luxury backpackers, as beds at 5 Foot Way Inn start from just S$15! Staying here is surprisingly very affordable for budget travellers, without having to sacrifice comfort.
